We build herofound.org so that the people we serve can use it, whatever their abilities and whatever device or assistive technology they rely on. This page says what we do, what we still need to improve, and how to reach us.
Our commitment
HERO Foundation serves veterans, first responders, nurses, teachers, EMTs, police officers, and firefighters, including people living with injuries, post-traumatic stress, and other disabilities. We want everyone to be able to read about our work, find out how to take part, and donate without barriers. Accessibility is part of the mission, not an add-on.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, which includes everything in WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We check the site against those guidelines with automated tools and by hand whenever we change it, and we fix what we find. This is a self-assessment; we have not yet commissioned an independent audit.
What we have done
- Pages use a logical heading structure and landmarks so screen-reader users can move through them quickly.
- Every meaningful image has descriptive alternative text. Decorative images and background video are hidden from assistive technology.
- All links and buttons can be reached and operated with a keyboard, and keyboard focus is visible.
- Text keeps strong contrast against the background, including where it sits over photographs and video.
- The layout adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops, and text can be enlarged to 200 percent without loss of content.
- A "Skip to content" link is the first item on every page for keyboard users.
- A "Pause motion" button in the bottom-left corner of every page stops the background videos, the scrolling diver, and the program carousel, and remembers your choice in this browser.
- The program carousel can be operated with a keyboard: its arrows and dots are buttons with labels, it announces the current program to screen readers, and it stops advancing on its own while you are inside it.
- Buttons and controls are at least 24 pixels in size, and the floating Donate button moves out of the way near the footer so it never covers what you have focused.
- Nothing flashes, and nothing is timed or expires.
Motion and video
The home page uses short, silent, looping video clips and a scrolling diver animation as decoration. They carry no information that is not also in the text. The "Pause motion" button stops them, and if you have turned on "Reduce motion" in your operating system or browser settings they start out stopped.
Known limitations
We are aware of these limitations:
- Donations are completed on a checkout page operated by Clover, and our social-media profiles are on Instagram and LinkedIn. We do not control the accessibility of those services.
Browsers and assistive technology
The site is built with standard HTML and CSS and is designed to work with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge, and with screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS. It does not require JavaScript to read any content.
Tell us about a barrier
If any part of this website is difficult for you to use, please tell us. Email info@herofound.org with the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. We aim to respond within five business days, and we will provide the information you need in another format if we cannot fix the problem right away.
